What is Earth Day?
51 years ago, 20 million people (roughly 10% of the countries population) marched across the US in protest of a 1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara. The goal was to reduce air and water pollution for the generations ahead, starting an annual reminder of the urgency of our climate crisis in the form of Earth Day, on the 22nd April each year.
Visiting the official Earth Day website shows a 3-day plan from the 20th-22nd April, including the global youth climate summit, featuring panels with key environmental activists such as Greta Thunberg giving special messages and appearing on panels discussing the latest environmental issues. Climate Change: How it Affects Us
Fast forward to the present day, and these problems have become worse. Nevertheless, access to information online and our ability to educate others on the importance of eco-friendliness are what we should focus on as we transition out of the pandemic and focus on restoring our environment.
2020 was a challenging year for everyone across the world and the UK, as we adapted to new lives at home and with limited social contact. One of the few benefits of this time away from normal life is a fall in CO2 emissions by approximately 10.7% from 2019.
Climate data posted on ourworldindata.org suggests we are still seeing incremental rises of 1.1°C on average per year to our global climate, which will lead to glacial melting, damaged natural habitats and extreme weather events such as heatwaves and flooding.
Earth Day Live & Hip Hop Caucus
Due to the global pandemic, this years Earth Day event will be hosted online for 5 hours globally. Hip-Hop Caucus, a group focusing on strengthening democracy for young people in marginalized communities by using Hip-Hop to help encourage discourse about politics and the environment will take center stage on the evening of the first day of the event.
This marks a shift in cultural awareness and it's refreshing to see more acknowledgement of groups affected by the likes of the 'Black Lives Matter' movement in having an equal say on important environmental debates. The creativity Hip-Hop Caucus are showing in terms of their approach to activism is crucial to developing a greater outreach.
